§01 — Categories.
Pond decor is the catalog category covering ornamental rather than functional accessories. Five sub-categories appear consistently across pond-supply retailers:
- Spitters — small statuary with a pump-fed water output.
- Spillway bowls — raised bowls that overflow into the pond.
- Fountain heads — pump-mounted nozzles producing surface patterns.
- Faux-rock pump and filter covers — moulded shells concealing hardware.
- Edge ornamentation — stepping stones, faux logs, and similar decorative elements.
Decorative accessories overlap with functional plumbing — a fountain head is both a decorative element and a plumbing fitting — but their primary classification on retailer pages is ornamental.
§02 — Spitters.
A spitter is a small statue or sculpture, typically cast resin, moulded with a hidden internal channel that carries water from a pump line to a discharge point on the figure (a fish's mouth, a frog's mouth, a leaning urn). Manufacturer specifications list the inlet barb size — most commonly 1/2 inch — and the recommended pump GPH range, often 100 to 500 GPH.
Spitters are positioned at the pond edge or on a deck above the pond, with the pump submerged in the pond and the airline routed discreetly to the figure's base.
§03 — Spillway bowls.
A spillway bowl is a raised cast-stone or resin bowl that overflows its rim into the pond. Water is pumped to the bowl, fills it, and returns by spillover. The cascading return surface is the bowl's ornamental purpose; its secondary effect is gentle aeration of the pond surface.
Spillway bowls are sold individually and in matched stacked sets (two or three bowls overflowing into one another). Manufacturer documentation specifies the recommended pump flow per bowl size — typically 200 to 1,000 GPH — and the inlet plumbing diameter.
§04 — Fountain heads.
Fountain heads are interchangeable nozzles that thread onto a submersible fountain pump. Common patterns include:
- Bell — a hemispherical sheet of water.
- Tier — concentric rings, often with two or three tiers.
- Spray — radiating jets in a fan or umbrella pattern.
- Foam — a column of frothy white water.
Fountain heads ship as kits with multiple interchangeable nozzles, allowing pattern selection without changing pumps.
§05 — Faux-rock covers.
Faux-rock pump and filter covers are moulded plastic or fibreglass shells coloured to simulate stone. They conceal pumps, intake-bay boxes, or pressurised filters at the pond edge. Manufacturer specifications publish the internal cavity dimensions; selecting a cover correctly requires measuring the equipment to be concealed.
§06 — Material durability.
Outdoor-rated pond decor is sold with a UV-resistant resin or gel-coated finish. Manufacturer documentation typically claims a five- to ten-year service life under direct sunlight before weathering becomes visible. Lower-cost decorative pieces may not carry such ratings; the product page or packaging is the authoritative source.
